Emma Dashwood, psychotherapist in Oxford
I have been a psychotherapist for over 20 years. My work is integrative, drawing on a range of approaches, with a strong grounding in transpersonal, existential and classic psychodynamic thinking: understanding how the past shapes the way we feel and relate now.
I believe people usually hold more of their own answers than they realise. My role is to help you notice the patterns that keep you stuck, feel what is underneath them, and find a way of living that fits you better.
Experience
I began my career in the NHS, spending four years as a psychotherapist in the Adult Mental Health Team at the Warneford Hospital in Oxford, offering individual psychodynamic therapy to outpatients.
Since then I have run a busy private practice in Jericho, working with adults, couples and many university students. I have worked with clients with ADHD for over 15 years.
Training and qualifications
Master's in Transpersonal Counselling and Psychotherapy, CCPE
Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, CCPE
Couples therapy training, Tavistock Relationships, including psychosexual work, anger and affairs
Certificate in Supervision, Metanoia Institute
Existential therapy training, with Prof. Ernesto Spinelli at Harley Therapy
Heart and Mind
Over many years of working with clients, I developed my own model, Heart and Mind. It starts from a simple observation: most of us live in our minds and lose touch with what we feel. We get caught up in the judging mind, instead of stepping back into a calmer, more peaceful sense of who we are.
Through connecting with the body and the breath, and by describing what you feel and how you feel it, you gradually move from thinking about your life to experiencing it, and this often results with feeling less anxious in general.
Professional membership
I am accredited with UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy) and BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). I work to their ethical frameworks and have regular clinical supervision.
